About Kumara Kottam Temple
Kumara Kottam is a temple to Murugan, the son of Shiva and Parvati and one of the most loved gods in Tamil Nadu. It stands between the Ekambareswarar and Kamakshi Amman temples, and devotees see the three together as a family: Murugan seated between his father and mother, a form known as Somaskanda.
The temple also has a place in Tamil literature. The priest and poet Kachiyappa Sivachariyar is said to have written the Kandapuranam, the Tamil telling of Murugan's story, here. The shrine goes back many centuries but was largely rebuilt in the early 20th century. It is smaller and calmer than its famous neighbours, which makes it an easy stop between them.
