Best time to visit Kanha

Kanha's core zones are open from October to June, and that is the window for a safari trip. November to February is the most comfortable time, with cool, clear days and misty mornings, though dawn drives can be freezing.

From April to June the days are very hot, but the forest thins out and animals gather near water, so many wildlife photographers prefer these months. The core zones close from July to September for the monsoon, when only some buffer zones stay open.

🌧️ Monsoon

Pack: a rain shell and shoes that can take mud, if you come for the buffer zones.

Best Month to Visit Kanha

October and November

The park reopens after the monsoon, usually on 1 October. The forest is green and the grass is tall, so animals can be harder to spot, but the air is fresh and the days are pleasant.

December to February

These are the coldest months, with sunny days and very cold mornings. Temperatures can drop below freezing in December and January, and frost and mist on the meadows make for good photos. Pack proper winter layers for the open jeep.

March to June

The days get hotter, reaching up to 45 °C in May and early June. The forest dries out and animals come to the waterholes, so many visitors find these the best months for tiger sightings. The monsoon usually arrives by mid-June, so late-June safaris can be wet.

July to September

The core zones close for the monsoon, usually from 1 July to 30 September. Some buffer zones stay open for safaris, but rain is heavy, especially in August, and tracks can be muddy.

When Is Kanha Most Crowded?

The Diwali holidays, Christmas and New Year are the peak weeks in Kanha, along with long weekends, and safari permits and rooms can sell out weeks ahead. School holidays in May and June also bring families, despite the heat.

February, March and early April tend to be calmer, especially on weekdays. Remember that there are no afternoon safaris on Wednesdays.
