About Kanha Meadows
Kanha Meadows are the wide grasslands at the centre of the park, in the Kanha zone. The park calls them the best place to see wildlife: herds of chital, sambar and gaur come to graze, and the predators follow. The meadows are best known for the hard-ground barasingha, a swamp deer that Kanha saved from extinction.
Only about 66 barasingha were left in 1970. Protection, breeding enclosures and new grassland on the sites of old villages helped the herds recover, and today there are close to a thousand. Come on a winter morning, when mist lifts off the grass and the herds are out grazing.
