About Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park is the core of the Kanha Tiger Reserve, about 940 sq km of sal forest, bamboo and open meadows in the Maikal hills. It became a national park in 1955 and one of India's first tiger reserves under Project Tiger in 1973. Tigers, leopards, sloth bears, dholes, gaur, sambar and chital live here, along with the hard-ground barasingha and more than 200 species of birds.

Visitors see the park on jeep safaris in four core zones: Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi. Only about a fifth of the core is open to tourism, and every jeep must take an official guide. The core zones usually close from 1 July to 30 September, there is no afternoon safari on Wednesdays, and permits are booked on the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department's official portal.
