About Athangudi Palace & Tiles
Athangudi is a village about 15 km from Karaikudi, known across India for its handmade tiles. The tiles are made one at a time by pouring coloured pigment into a patterned mould on a sheet of glass, backing it with a sand and cement mix, then curing it in water and drying it in the sun. You can visit the small workshops in the village and watch the artisans at work.
The village is also home to Athangudi Palace (Sri Lakshmi Vilas), a large Chettiar mansion that visitors can tour. Its halls show off everything the Chettiars loved: Burma teak pillars, Italian marble, Belgian glass, painted ceilings and, of course, floor after floor of colourful local tiles.
