About the Chettinad Mansions

The Chettinad mansions were built between the mid-1800s and the 1940s by Nattukottai Chettiar families, who made their fortunes in trade and banking across South-East Asia. Each house is built around a series of courtyards, with long rows of Burma teak pillars, carved doors, Italian marble, Belgian mirrors and floors of handmade Athangudi tiles. Some stretch from one street to the next.

Many mansions are still owned by the families and stay locked for much of the year, opening for weddings and festivals. A few are open to visitors for a small fee, and some have been restored as heritage stays. Chettinad's village clusters are on India's Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage status.
