Keep to the paths between the rows and never pick leaves.
Ask pickers before you take their photo.
Buy sealed packs of leaf tea with a recent date to take home.
Wear shoes with grip, as the terrace paths are steep and slippery after rain.
Pair the visit with a cup at the Tea Estate Café nearby.
Tea on a Kumaon ridge
Tea was grown in Kumaon in British times, and the poet Sumitranandan Pant's father managed a tea garden in Kausani. The present estate on the slopes below the town was planted from 2000 onwards, as part of a state effort to bring tea back to the Uttarakhand hills. Today the Uttarakhand Tea Development Board runs a tea factory at Pingalkot, near Kausani, which makes orthodox leaf tea.
What you see
The bushes grow in neat, rounded rows on terraces that step down the hill, with oak and pine at the edges. On clear days the snow peaks rise above the far side of the valley, which gives the classic Kausani tea photo. The terraces are greenest after the monsoon and in spring, when new leaves are picked.
Visiting
Parts of the estate can be seen from the road and the paths through it. Whether you can visit the factory, and at what hours, changes from year to year, so ask in Kausani before you set out. Keep to the paths between rows, and do not pick leaves or step on the bushes. Pickers are at work in the season; ask before you photograph them.
Buying tea
Packs of Kausani leaf tea are sold in the town and at the estate outlet when it is open. Look for sealed packs with a recent date. Orthodox tea is best made with water just off the boil, steeped for a few minutes, with little or no milk.
Nearby
The estate sits on the road side of the ridge, a short drive from the market. Combine it with a stop at the Tea Estate Café for a cup, and with the ridge view on the way back.
