A waterfall and a cave shrine

Rudradhari Falls lies about 12 km from Kausani, in the hills towards Someshwar. A stream drops in steps down a rock face into pools, surrounded by pine forest and small terraced fields. Beside the falls are natural caves, one of which holds a small Shiva shrine. The name joins Rudra, a name of Shiva, and Hari, a name of Vishnu, and both are worshipped here.

The walk

Most visitors drive to the village road near the falls and walk the last stretch, about 2 km each way. The path passes rice terraces and crosses small streams, then climbs through the forest. It is not difficult, but there are rocky, uneven sections and some steep steps near the falls. Allow about two to three hours for the round trip, including time at the falls. Local guides and village children often offer to show the way.

When to go

The falls run strongest at the end of the monsoon, from late August to October, and the fields are green then. In the monsoon itself the path can be slippery and streams can rise quickly after heavy rain. In spring and early summer the flow is much smaller, though the forest walk is pleasant.

At the shrine

The cave shrine is a working place of worship. Remove shoes before entering, keep voices down and ask before taking photos inside. The caves are low and dark in places, so a torch helps.

Good to know

There are no shops at the falls. Carry water and a snack, and take all litter back with you. Start in the morning so you are out of the forest well before dark.
