About the Paradesi Synagogue

The Paradesi Synagogue in Mattancherry was built in 1568 and is one of the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth. It sits at the end of Synagogue Lane in the area known as Jew Town, next to Mattancherry Palace. Its white clock tower is one of the most recognisable sights in the old quarter.

Inside, the floor is covered with hand-painted blue-and-white Chinese tiles, and glass chandeliers hang from the ceiling. The synagogue belonged to the Paradesi Jews, the community that settled in Kochi from Europe and the Middle East, and today very few members of Kochi's Jewish community remain. The lanes outside are lined with antique, spice and craft shops.
