About Santa Cruz Basilica
Santa Cruz Basilica is one of the oldest churches in India and one of the best-known landmarks in Fort Kochi. The Portuguese laid its foundation in 1505, and it became a cathedral in 1558. The original building was destroyed by the British in the late 18th century, and the church you see today was completed in the late 19th century. Pope John Paul II gave it the status of a basilica in 1984.
The church is known for its white front with twin spires and its Gothic style. Inside, the ceiling and walls are covered with paintings, and stained-glass windows show scenes from the Bible. It is a working church, but visitors are welcome outside service times, and it is only a few minutes' walk from St. Francis Church and the fishing nets.
