Asia's oldest museum

The Indian Museum began in 1814, when the Asiatic Society of Bengal agreed to the botanist Nathaniel Wallich's proposal for a museum. The present building on Chowringhee, now Jawaharlal Nehru Road, was completed in 1875. Its two storeys of galleries surround a large central courtyard with arcades. It is the oldest museum in Asia and one of the largest, with 35 galleries in six sections: art, archaeology, anthropology, geology, zoology and economic botany.

What to see

The Bharhut gallery holds the railings and a gateway from a Buddhist stupa of the 2nd century BCE, carved with stories and inscribed in the Brahmi script. There are Buddhist and Hindu sculptures from Bengal, Bihar and Odisha, a copy of the Ashokan lion capital, and an Egyptian mummy. The natural history galleries have fossils, including a sauropod dinosaur egg, meteorites and a large collection of animal skeletons. The geology galleries are run by the Geological Survey of India, which still has its headquarters in the building.

Visiting

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. Photography with a phone or camera needs a small extra ticket, bought at the counter. Allow at least two hours, more if you like sculpture. Some galleries may be closed for restoration, so ask at the entrance.

Around the museum

Sudder Street, the city's old backpacker lane, runs along one side. New Market is a few minutes' walk to the north. Nizam's is there for a kathi roll, and K.C. Das at Esplanade for sweets. Park Street Metro station is close by. The Victoria Memorial is about 2 km south across the Maidan.
