Local tips

Agree the price and length of a boat ride before you step on board.

Ask for a life jacket on the boat, and do not board an overloaded one.

Come on a weekday evening if you want the pavilion without crowds.

Do not point your camera at Fort William or the naval jetty, which are military areas.

Walk the riverside path north towards Babughat after sunset.

Carry mosquito repellent for monsoon evenings by the water.

Use the Circular Railway's Prinsep Ghat station if you want to skip road traffic.

A memorial to James Prinsep

Prinsep Ghat was built in 1841 on the Kolkata bank of the Hooghly. Its white Palladian pavilion, designed by W. Fitzgerald and completed in 1843, honours James Prinsep. He was a scholar and assay master of the Calcutta mint who deciphered the Brahmi script of Ashoka's inscriptions. For years royal and official visitors landed at the ghat's jetty. The pavilion was restored by INTACH in 1993 and again by the state in 2001.

The riverfront

A landscaped path of about 2 km runs north from Prinsep Ghat to Babughat, with gardens, benches and lights. South of the pavilion, the cable-stayed Vidyasagar Setu crosses the river. It opened in 1992 and was the first cable-stayed bridge in India. Boatmen at the ghat offer short rides on wooden country boats, most popular around sunset.

Evenings at the ghat

Prinsep Ghat is one of Kolkata's oldest places for an evening out. Families, couples and friends come for the breeze and the snack stalls, and weekends are busy. Weekday evenings are calmer.

Things to be aware of

Fort William, the Indian Army's Eastern Command headquarters, is right next to the ghat, and a naval jetty lies nearby. Do not photograph the military areas or their gates. Keep to the lit paths after dark.

Getting there

Prinsep Ghat station, on the Circular Railway, is next to the ghat. Taxis and app cabs are the easiest option from Park Street or Esplanade. The Victoria Memorial is about 2.5 km away, so the two make a good afternoon-to-sunset plan.
