Munroe Island, known locally as Mundrothuruthu, is a group of small islands where the Kallada river meets Ashtamudi Lake, about 25 km from Kollam city. It is named after Colonel John Munro, a British Resident of Travancore in the early 19th century. The islands are laced with narrow canals, coconut groves and small village homes.
The best way to see Munroe Island is by small canoe, paddled by a local boatman through channels too narrow for houseboats. On the way you pass fishermen, coir-making, prawn farms and village life going on at the water's edge. Trips usually start early in the morning, when the air is cool and the canals are at their calmest.
