About Kappad Beach

Kappad Beach lies a little under 20 km north of Kozhikode and is where Vasco da Gama's arrival on the Malabar coast in 1498 is traditionally remembered. A small stone monument on the beach marks the event. Some historians believe his ships actually landed a little further north near Koyilandy, but Kappad is the place most people come to see.

The beach is quieter and cleaner than the city seafront, with palm trees, rocks at one end and gentle views along the coast. It has Blue Flag certification for its clean beach and visitor facilities, which makes it a good place for a relaxed walk rather than a busy evening out.
