Best time to visit Lamayuru
The easiest months for Lamayuru are May to September, when both highways are usually open and days are warm. Ladakh is a rain-shadow desert, so the Indian monsoon brings it little rain but occasional flash floods.
❄️ Winter
Oct – Mar
Cold, with snow on the higher ground and some high passes and roads closed — beautiful, but pack and plan for it.
Pack: heavy insulated layers, gloves, a warm hat and waterproof boots.

RecommendedApr – Jun
The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.
Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.
Shines now: Fotu La, Moonland

RecommendedJul – Sep
Lush and green but wet, with a real risk of landslides and roadblocks on mountain routes.
Pack: a waterproof shell, quick-dry layers and sturdy, grippy footwear.
Plan a monsoon day →May and June
The season opens as the snow clears. Zoji La on the Srinagar side usually reopens in spring, while the Manali road opens later, so flying into Leh is the simplest way in early in the season. Days warm up, nights stay cold. June is when the monastery's Yuru Kabgyat masked dances usually fall, and it is the busiest month for rooms.
July and August
Peak summer. Days are warm and the barley fields around the village are green, turning gold towards late August. Rain is light, as Ladakh sits behind the Himalaya, but heavy bursts do happen and can bring mud and rockfall onto the highway. Build a spare day into any trip that depends on the roads.
September
Probably the best month for photography. Skies are clear and deep blue, the crowds thin out, and the harvest brings golden fields and busy threshing. Nights get close to freezing by the end of the month, so pack warmer layers.
October
Still possible, and very quiet. Many guesthouses and cafés begin to close, and the first snows can reach Fotu La and Zoji La. Check the road status before you set out from Srinagar.
November to March
Deep winter. Temperatures stay below freezing, and Zoji La usually closes, which cuts the Srinagar road for several months. From Leh the highway to Lamayuru is kept open where possible, though Fotu La can be blocked by snow in January and February. The monastery still has monks in residence, but services for visitors are thin. Go only with local transport arranged, warm kit and flexible dates.
April
The shoulder month. It is cold and quiet, and road openings vary year to year. Check with a Leh operator before planning a trip.
