About the Gandhi Memorial Museum

The Gandhi Memorial Museum is housed in the Tamukkam Palace, built around 1670 by Rani Mangammal of the Nayak dynasty. It was opened in 1959 and is one of the main museums in India dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. Madurai has a special place in his story, as it was here in 1921 that he first chose to wear only a simple loincloth.

Inside, the displays trace Gandhi's life and India's freedom struggle through photos, letters and personal objects. The most moving exhibit is the blood-stained dhoti he was wearing when he was assassinated in 1948. The palace sits in large, quiet grounds north of the Vaigai River, and the calm setting makes it a good break from the busy old city.
