About Koodal Azhagar Temple
Koodal Azhagar Temple is an ancient Vishnu temple in the old city of Madurai, within about 1 km of the Meenakshi temple. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples praised by the Tamil saint-poets known as the Alvars, which makes it an important place of pilgrimage.
The temple is best known for its three-tiered tower over the main shrine, where Vishnu is shown in three poses: sitting, standing and reclining. It also has finely carved pillars and a colourful gopuram. It is much quieter than the Meenakshi temple, so it is a good place to see a working temple in the old city at a slower pace.
