About the Meenakshi Amman Temple
The Meenakshi Amman Temple is the heart of Madurai and one of the most important temples in South India. It is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi and her consort Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva. The temple has 14 gopurams covered in thousands of brightly painted figures of gods, animals and demons, and the tallest, the southern tower, is about 52 m high.
Inside, the temple is a maze of pillared halls, shrines and corridors. Highlights include the Golden Lotus Tank and the Hall of a Thousand Pillars, which actually has 985 carved pillars. The temple is busy from early morning until late at night, and every evening it holds a ceremony in which Sundareswarar is carried to Meenakshi's chamber. In April and May, it is the centre of the Chithirai festival, the biggest event in Madurai.
