About Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam

Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is a huge temple tank in the east of Madurai, built by King Thirumalai Nayak in the 17th century. It is one of the largest temple tanks in Tamil Nadu, with stone steps on every side and a mandapam on an island in the middle, which holds a small Vinayaka shrine.

The tank is best known for the Teppam float festival, usually held in January or February, when the deities of the Meenakshi temple are taken out on a lit-up float and pulled around the water. The tank is fed from the Vaigai River through channels, and at other times of year the water level can be low, so the scene you see depends on the season.
