About Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal

Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal is a 17th-century palace built by King Thirumalai Nayak, who ruled Madurai from 1623 to 1659. Only part of the original palace survives, but what remains is on a huge scale, with a large open courtyard surrounded by arcades of giant white pillars and arches, and a grand hall with a high domed ceiling.

The palace mixes Dravidian and Islamic styles, and its pillars are among the largest in South India. It is about 1 km south-east of the Meenakshi temple, an easy walk through the old city. In the evening, a sound and light show tells the story of the palace and its king.
