Best time to visit Mahabalipuram
The best time to visit Mahabalipuram is from January to March, when the rains have passed and the days are warm, dry and clear. November to February is the busiest season, with the Mamallapuram Dance Festival running around December and January.
Mahabalipuram gets most of its rain from the northeast monsoon, from October to December, not in the June to September monsoon that soaks much of India. April to June is very hot and humid, so if you travel then, plan to see the monuments early and late in the day.

January and February
The best weather of the year. The rain has cleared, the sea is calmer and the mornings are pleasant for sunrise at the Shore Temple. This is also a busy time, with the end of the dance festival and Pongal in mid-January.
March
Still dry and bright, but the heat builds through the month. Crowds are smaller, and it is a good time for photography in the early mornings.
April to June
The hottest months, with May usually the peak. The rock and sand get very hot by late morning, so start early, rest in the middle of the day and go out again in the late afternoon.
July to September
Hot and humid, with only occasional showers, as the southwest monsoon mostly misses this coast. It is a quiet, off-season time to visit if you can handle the heat.
October to December
The northeast monsoon brings the heaviest rain of the year, sometimes with cyclone warnings. Some days are clear, but plans can change quickly. Check the weather before you travel, especially in November. The dance festival usually begins in late December.
When Is Mahabalipuram Most Crowded?
Mahabalipuram is busiest on weekends and public holidays, when many people drive down from Chennai, and from late December to January, with the dance festival, New Year and Pongal. The main monuments are most crowded from late morning to mid-afternoon.
For a quieter trip, visit on a weekday in February or March, and reach the Shore Temple when it opens.
