Local tips
Keep your ticket, as the same ticket covers the Shore Temple on the same day.
Visit when it opens for the best light and the fewest people.
Find the stone elephant, which some say shows the shape of the ratha next to it.
Look for the carved figures on the walls of the Arjuna Ratha and the Dharmaraja Ratha.
Do not climb on the rathas or the stone animals.
Walk around the back of the group for photos without people in front.
Look out for the stone-carving workshops on the way from the town centre.
About the Pancha Rathas
The Pancha Rathas, or Five Rathas, are five small temples each carved from a single piece of granite in the 7th century. They are shaped like temple chariots and are named after the five Pandava brothers and their wife Draupadi from the Mahabharata, though these names came much later. Each one shows a different style of roof and design, from a simple hut shape to a tiered tower.
Beside the temples stand life-size stone animals: an elephant, a lion and Nandi the bull. The rathas were never finished or used for worship, which makes them a rare look at how early South Indian temples were designed. They are about 1 km south of the town centre, and the same entry ticket covers the Shore Temple.
