About the Shore Temple
The Shore Temple stands right on the beach, facing the Bay of Bengal. It was built in the early 8th century under the Pallava king Narasimhavarman II and is one of the oldest temples in South India built from cut stone blocks rather than carved from rock. It has two towers over shrines to Shiva, with a small shrine to Vishnu lying down between them.
Rows of carved Nandi bulls line the walls, and centuries of salt wind have worn the carvings soft. A sea wall now protects the temple from the waves. It is the best-known image of Mahabalipuram and part of the UNESCO-listed Group of Monuments, and the same ticket covers the Pancha Rathas.
