About Mangaladevi Temple

Mangaladevi Temple stands at Bolar, about 3 km south-west of the city centre, and is dedicated to the goddess Mangaladevi, a form of Shakti. The city takes its name from her. Local tradition links the temple to the Alupa king Kundavarma, who is believed to have built or expanded it around the 9th and 10th centuries.

The temple is built in the coastal style, with sloping roofs, a courtyard and rows of lamps. It is busy with local families all year, and at its busiest during Navaratri, when special rituals and celebrations draw large crowds as part of the Mangaluru Dasara.
