About Sultan Battery

Sultan Battery is a small black-stone watchtower at Boloor, about 4 km from the city centre, on the bank of the Gurupura river. It was built by Tipu Sultan in 1784 to stop enemy warships from coming up the river into Mangalore. Although it is called a battery, it looks more like a small fort, with openings for cannons.

Today it is a quiet place with views over the river, fishing boats and the green banks on the other side. The Boloor ferry point nearby runs boats across the river towards Tannirbhavi Beach, which makes a good add-on to a visit.
