Local tips

Pair the lake with Echo Point and Louisa Point on one walking loop.

Do not swim or wash in the lake; it is the town's drinking water.

Keep away from the dam overflow in the monsoon, where the rocks are slippery.

Remove your shoes before entering the Pisarnath Mahadev temple.

Keep food and bags closed, as monkeys gather by the temple.

Come on a weekday morning for still water and few people.

Take your rubbish back to town, as bins are few on the forest paths.

The town's water

Charlotte Lake is a reservoir held back by a small dam, and it supplies Matheran's drinking water. It is ringed by tall trees, and the water is still and dark in the dry months. Because it is the town's supply, swimming, fishing and boating are not allowed.

Pisarnath Mahadev

On the bank stands the Pisarnath Mahadev temple, a small Shiva shrine and the oldest on the hill. The deity is treated as the village god of Matheran. Remove your shoes and dress modestly if you go in, and ask before taking photos inside.

In the monsoon

From June to September the lake fills and water spills over the dam, which draws weekend crowds. The flow can be strong and the rocks are slippery, so enjoy it from a safe spot and keep children close.

Getting there

The lake is about 2 km from the station on a shaded forest path, an easy walk of around half an hour. Echo Point and Louisa Point are both close by, so most people visit them in one loop. Horses also come this way.

Around the lake

Tea and snack stalls often set up nearby on busy days. Monkeys are common here, especially around the temple, and will grab food and plastic bags. Keep both out of sight.
