Local tips

Visit with Charlotte Lake and Louisa Point, which are all close together.

Try the echo early in the morning, before the crowds make it hard to hear.

Keep children back from the unfenced stretches of the edge.

Hold on to food and phones, as monkeys are bold here.

Buy a box of chikki from the stalls if you missed the bazaar.

Wear shoes with grip, as the rock near the edge gets slick in the rain.

Give way to horses on the narrow forest path.

A call and an answer

Echo Point is a cliff-edge viewpoint over a deep, wooded ravine on the south-western side of Matheran. Its name comes from the sound: shout across the valley and, on a still day, your voice comes back from the far wall. It is one of the busiest points in town, partly because it is easy to reach and partly because children love it.

Getting there

It is about 2.5 km from the station, roughly half an hour's walk on a shaded forest path. Charlotte Lake is next door, and Louisa Point is close by, so most people see all three in one loop. Horses are available if you would rather ride.

The view

The ravine below is covered in trees, with the ridges of the Western Ghats beyond. In the dry months the view is clear in the morning and hazy by afternoon. In the monsoon, cloud often fills the valley and the echo sounds muffled, but the forest is at its greenest.

At the point

Stalls selling chikki, snacks and tea often set up near the viewpoint on busy days. Monkeys wait for dropped food, so keep bags closed. The edge has railings in places but not everywhere. Keep children close, and stay behind the barriers even for a photo.

When to go

Arrive early on weekends, before the groups from the day trains reach it. On weekdays it is calm enough to hear your echo clearly.
