Local tips
Book Neral–Matheran tickets as early as you can for weekends and holidays.
Use the Aman Lodge shuttle if you arrive by taxi and do not want to walk from Dasturi.
Check whether the Neral section is running before a monsoon trip, as it usually stops from June.
Sit on the valley side on the way up for the best views.
Pack light, because the carriages have little room for big bags.
Look at the old steam locomotive on display at Matheran station.
Never walk along the track for photos; the trains are small but they do not stop quickly.
A railway from 1907
The Matheran Hill Railway is a two-foot narrow-gauge line that climbs about 21 km from Neral to Matheran. Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy built it between 1904 and 1907, with money from his father, Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy. It is on UNESCO's tentative list of World Heritage Sites, alongside India's better-known mountain railways. Steam engines ran it until the early 1980s, and one of the original locomotives stands on display at Matheran station.
The route
The line leaves Neral and winds up through forest, with sharp curves and a large horseshoe embankment. It passes through the short One-Kiss Tunnel, then climbs past Panorama Point and Simpson's Tank before ending at Matheran station in the heart of the town. The full trip takes a little over two hours. Aman Lodge, near the Dasturi car park, is the last stop before the town.
The shuttle and the monsoon break
The Neral to Aman Lodge section is usually suspended through the monsoon, from June until October or November, because of landslide risk. A shuttle keeps running between Aman Lodge and Matheran all year. It saves the 3 km walk from Dasturi and runs more often at weekends.
Tickets
Seats are few and the trains fill fast on weekends and holidays. Book ahead where you can, and check the current timetable, as it changes with the season.
Photographing the train
The station is the easiest place for photos: the little carriages, the old engine on display and the bustle of arrivals. For a moving shot, wait on the town side of a curve near the station as the shuttle comes in. Stay well clear of the track.
