One Tree Hill is a small rocky knoll on the edge of Matheran with a single tree on top, which gives it its name. It is one of the quieter points in town. Most visitors never walk this far, so you may have it to yourself on a weekday.
Shivaji's Ladder
A trail runs down from One Tree Hill to the valley, and part of it is a steep flight of rough steps known as Shivaji's Ladder. Local tradition says Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used this route up the hill. Trekkers also climb to One Tree Hill from Ambewadi village below, a hike of a few hours with views towards the backwaters of Morbe Dam. Do not start down the ladder casually. It is steep, and the climb back up is hard.
Getting there
The point is about 3–4 km from the station along red-earth forest paths. Allow around an hour on foot, or take a horse. Carry water, as there is little on sale along the way.
The view
From the knoll you look out over a deep valley and the ranges beyond. In the late afternoon the light comes across the hills and the tree stands out against the sky. In the monsoon the view is often lost in cloud, but the walk through the wet forest is pleasant in light rain.
Staying safe
The knoll has little or no railing. Keep back from the edge, especially in wind or mist, and head back to town well before dark, as the paths are unlit.
