Local tips
Leave town about an hour and a half before sunrise if you are walking.
Carry a torch, as the forest path is unlit before dawn.
Book a horse the evening before and agree the fare in advance.
Take a light jacket for the wind at the point in winter.
Carry water and a snack, because there may be nothing for sale that early.
Stay back from the unfenced edges, especially in mist.
Come from October to February for the clearest views.
The northern tip
Panorama Point is at the far northern end of Matheran's plateau. The land falls away on three sides, so the view sweeps across the Neral plains, the hills around them and the ridges of the Western Ghats. It is known as the town's sunrise point, and on a clear morning the light moves across the plains as you watch.
Getting there
It is the farthest of the main points, about 5 km from the station. On foot, allow well over an hour each way along forest paths. For sunrise, leave in the dark with a torch, or arrange a horse the evening before and agree the price then. The toy-train line passes below it on its final climb into town.
What you see
In the dry months haze builds as the day warms, so the view is sharpest early. After the monsoon, from October, the hills are green and the air is clearer. In the rains, cloud often fills the valley, and a view may open for only a few seconds.
At the point
The viewpoint is open ground on the cliff edge, with railings in places. Keep well back from unfenced edges, especially in wind or mist. There are few facilities at the point, so carry water and something to eat.
Combining it
Few other points sit on the way, so treat Panorama Point as a morning of its own. You will be back in the bazaar in time for breakfast and can visit the lake and Echo Point in the afternoon.
