October and November

The best two months. The rains have eased, the forest is still deep green, the streams are full and the air is often clear enough to see far across the Bangladesh plains from the tower. Days are warm, nights pleasant. Weekends are busy with visitors from Shillong and Guwahati, so book homestays early.

December to February

Cool and mostly dry. Mornings and evenings are cold enough for a fleece, and the day is short, so start early. Christmas is a big time in this Christian village, with decorated churches and carol singing. Haze can build over the plains later in the winter, so tower views are less reliable than in autumn.

March to May

Warm, humid and green, with fruit and flowers in the village gardens. Pre-monsoon storms arrive in the afternoons, especially from April, and can be heavy. Mornings are usually the clearest part of the day. This is a good time for fewer crowds before the rains.

June to September

The monsoon. The southern slopes of the Khasi Hills take some of the heaviest rain in India, and Mawlynnong is right on that edge. It can rain for days. Paths and roots are slippery, leeches come out on forest walks, and cloud often hides the view from the tower. The root bridge and streams are at their fullest and greenest. Landslides can close hill roads, so keep a spare day in your plans and check road conditions before you set out from Shillong.

Pick your day of the week

Since January 2026 the village council has closed Mawlynnong to day visitors on Sundays; eateries, shops and toilets close too. Saturdays and public holidays are the busiest days. A weekday from Monday to Friday gives you the quietest lanes. If you stay the night, you can walk the village early the next morning before the first cars arrive.

Combining with Dawki

Dawki's Umngot river is clear only in the dry months, roughly November to April. If you are pairing the two, those months suit both.
