The church in the village
The Church of the Epiphany is a small church near the heart of Mawlynnong, surrounded by flower beds and narrow stone paths. It dates from the early 1900s; one account gives 1902, and links it to the Welsh missionaries who brought Christianity to the Khasi Hills. Its pale walls, dark trim and neat garden make it one of the most photographed buildings in the village.
A place of worship
Mawlynnong is almost entirely Christian and has three churches. This one is still in use, not a museum. On weekdays you can usually step inside if the door is open. Go in quietly, take off your cap, cover your shoulders and knees, and do not photograph anyone praying. Sunday belongs to worship, and since January 2026 the village is closed to day visitors on Sundays partly so services can go on without an audience.
What to see
The interior is simple: wooden pews, plain walls and an altar. The real draw is the outside, with flowers in bloom along the paths through much of the year. In December the church and the lanes around it are decorated for Christmas.
Visiting
There is no fee to see the church. It is a short walk from the parking area and on the way to the Balancing Rock. It is quiet in the early morning and late afternoon. If you want to know more about the church or its history, ask a villager or your homestay host rather than relying on signs. Then carry on through the village lanes back towards the parking area.
