The pleasant months in Nainital are April to mid-June and October. Those are also the months the whole of north India drives up, so the choice is usually between good weather and space.

❄️ Winter

Recommended

Oct – Mar

October and November are clear, crisp and dry — the best mountain views of the year; December to February turns cold, with snow on the higher ground, enough in places to close roads.

Pack: warm layers and a jacket for October–November; thermals, gloves and a woollen cap from December.

April to mid-June

Days are mild, and the lake and the ridges are at their busiest. School holidays in May and June bring the biggest crowds of the year. Traffic controls at the edge of town are common on these weekends, and hotels fill up. Go on weekdays if you can, and book a room with parking.

Late June to September

The monsoon is heavy here. Mist can hide the lake for days, and landslides block hill roads, including the approach roads from Haldwani and Kaladhungi. In September 2025, cracks closed part of the Lower Mall to traffic for repairs. It is green and quiet, but keep your plans flexible and check the roads each morning.

October and November

This is the clearest time of year. The rain has washed the haze out of the air, and the snow peaks show best from Snow View and Tiffin Top. Evenings are cold, and crowds are smaller outside the Diwali and Dussehra holidays.

December to February

Winter is cold, with frosty nights and many sharp, clear days. Snow falls on the higher ridges most winters, and occasionally in the town, but it cannot be planned around. When it does fall, the roads jam with day-trippers. The winter carnival, revived in December 2025, brings events to the Flats and the Mall.

March

A short, cool shoulder month. Kumaoni Holi, with its sung gatherings, is held in the hills around this time.

For each kind of trip

For views, go in October or November. For boating and long walks in mild weather, go in April or early May on weekdays. For a quiet, cheap stay, the early winter weeks work well if you pack warmly.
