October and November

The rains have gone and the fields around Bargaon are green. Days are warm but pleasant, and the air is often clear. Chhath and Diwali fall in these months. The Sun Temple at Bargaon fills with worshippers for Chhath, and Pawapuri holds its Mahotsav on the Diwali new moon, the night Jains mark Mahavira's nirvana. Both are memorable, but roads and rooms get crowded, so book early.

December to February

This is peak season, when many Buddhist pilgrims from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and elsewhere tour the Buddhist sites of Bihar. Afternoons are mild and sunny. Mornings can be cold and thick with fog, sometimes until mid-morning, which can delay trains and make early drives slow. The Rajgir Mahotsav, a dance and music festival, is usually held in late November or December nearby.

March

Warm and dry, with fewer crowds. Holi falls in this month. It is a good time if you want quieter ruins and do not mind a hot early afternoon.

April to June

This is the hardest season. Temperatures often pass 40°C, and the ruins have almost no shade. If you must come, be at the gate when it opens at 9 am and finish before noon. Spend the afternoon indoors or at the museum, which is cooler (but closed on Fridays).

July to September

The monsoon brings humid days and heavy showers that usually come and go. The ruins look fresh, with green lawns against the red brick, and there are few visitors. Paths can be slippery, and some rural roads get muddy.

Which days of the week

The ruins are usually open every day. The museum is closed on Fridays, so if you want both on one visit, avoid a Friday. Weekends bring more school groups and local families.
