What's on in Nalanda

Nalanda's calendar is shaped by three faiths: Hindu Chhath at Bargaon, the Jain nirvana night at Pawapuri, and Buddhist memorial days at the ruins. Dates move with the lunar calendar, so confirm them each year.

Nothing dated is confirmed for Nalanda right now, so here is the year instead — the fixtures that come round annually, and what each one means for a visit.

The year in Nalanda

Nalanda packs most of its outdoor calendar into the cooler months; the pre-monsoon peak is hot enough that daytime processions are genuinely hard going. Broadly, Oct – Mar is when visiting is most comfortable here, and that is when the calendar is busiest — which also means accommodation is most expensive and books furthest ahead.

Most of these follow lunar calendars and move by weeks from year to year, so treat the windows below as the season rather than the date, and confirm the year’s dates before you book around one.

Across Bihar

Chhath Puja

🗓️ October–November

Four days of riverbank ritual at sunrise and sunset, the most important festival in the state.

Planning: Trains into Bihar are booked out weeks ahead — this is the largest annual migration in the region.

Nationwide

Diwali

🗓️ October–November

The biggest holiday of the year — lamps, sweets, fireworks and a week of visiting family. Cities are lit up and markets stay open late.

Holi

🗓️ March

Coloured powder and water, thrown at anyone within reach, mostly through the morning.

Navratri and Dussehra

🗓️ September–October

Nine nights of fasting, music and dance, ending with Dussehra. What it looks like changes completely by region — garba in Gujarat, pandals in Bengal, processions in the south.

Eid al-Fitr

🗓️ shifts ~11 days earlier each year

The end of Ramadan. The old quarters of Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Bhopal are at their best in the evenings through the preceding month, when food streets run past midnight.

Makar Sankranti and Pongal

🗓️ mid-January

The harvest turn, marked with kites in the west and north and four days of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

Chhath at the Bargaon Sun Temple

Chhath is Bihar's biggest festival, and Bargaon is one of its most important places. Over four days, usually in October or November, worshippers fast and then stand in the pond by the Sun Temple to make offerings to the setting and rising sun. The banks are lined with families carrying baskets of fruit and thekua. A smaller Chhath is held in spring, in the month of Chaitra. It is a moving sight, but the village gets very crowded and roads near the ruins may be closed. Watch from a respectful distance and ask before photographing anyone in the water.

Pawapuri Mahotsav on the Diwali new moon

Jains believe Mahavira attained nirvana at Pawapuri on the new-moon night of Diwali. Pilgrims gather at the Jal Mandir and the other temples, and lamps are lit around the lotus pond. Since 2017 the Bihar government has marked it as a two-day state festival, the Pawapuri Mahotsav, with a fair. Expect large crowds and book rooms in Rajgir or Bihar Sharif early.

Mahavir Jayanti

In March or April, Jains celebrate Mahavira's birth. Kundalpur, which the Digambara sect regards as his birthplace, and Pawapuri both hold prayers and processions.

Xuanzang Memorial Day

Nava Nalanda Mahavihara holds a memorial day for Xuanzang each February at the memorial hall, with monks, scholars and visiting diplomats. It is a quiet, formal event rather than a public festival.

Buddha Purnima

On the full moon of April or May, Buddhist monks and pilgrims hold prayers in the region. Bodh Gaya is the main centre, but Nalanda and Rajgir see visitors too. It falls in the hot season, so go early in the day.

Rajgir Mahotsav

About 12–15 km away, Rajgir hosts a three-day festival of classical and folk dance and music, usually in late November or December. It is an easy evening trip from Nalanda.

Planning around festivals

Chhath and Diwali bring the biggest crowds and the fullest trains into Bihar. If you want quiet ruins, visit a week before or after.

Questions

Nalanda — FAQ

Can tourists watch Chhath at Bargaon?

Yes, respectfully. Stand back from the water's edge, do not block worshippers' paths, and ask before photographing anyone, especially women making offerings.

What happens at Pawapuri on Diwali?

Jains mark Mahavira's nirvana with prayers and lamps at the Jal Mandir. The state holds a two-day Pawapuri Mahotsav with a fair, and the town is very busy.

Is there a festival at the Nalanda ruins themselves?

Not a large public one. Xuanzang Memorial Day in February is held at the memorial hall nearby, and Buddhist groups sometimes hold prayers at the great stupa.
