What to Wear in Nalanda

The ruins have almost no shade, and the brick paths soak up heat. Dress for sun first, then add what you need for the Jain temples, which have their own rules.

For the ruins

You will walk for two hours or more on open brick and gravel paths with very little shade. Wear loose cotton or linen that covers your shoulders, a wide hat or cap, and sunglasses. Light colours help in the heat. Carry a water bottle; there is nowhere to buy water once you are inside the site.

Wear closed walking shoes or sturdy sandals. The paths are uneven, and some steps between courtyards are high.

Winter mornings

From December to January, mornings on the Bihar plains can be cold and foggy, and the ruins open at 9 am while the air is still chilly. A sweater or light jacket that you can tie round your waist by noon works well. October, November and February need only a light layer for the early hours.

Summer and monsoon

April to June is very hot, often above 40°C by midday. Loose, breathable cottons, a hat and a scarf to cover your neck make a real difference. From July to September, expect humid days and sudden showers. Quick-dry clothes and a small umbrella are better than a heavy raincoat. Brick paths get slippery after rain, so pick shoes with grip.

At Pawapuri and Kundalpur

The Jain temples expect modest dress: shoulders and knees covered. Leather is not allowed inside, so leave belts, wallets and bags made of leather in the car. Shoes come off before the temple, so slip-on sandals save time. Socks help on marble that heats up in the afternoon sun.

At the Black Buddha and the Sun Temple

These are active places of worship for local villagers. Cover your shoulders and knees, remove your shoes where others do, and keep a stole handy.

Colours for photos

The brick is a strong orange-red. Cream, white, olive or deep blue stand out against it; red and rust blend in. At the white Jal Mandir, a bright colour like saffron or green works better than white.

Buying local cloth

There is little to buy near the ruins. For Bhagalpuri tussar silk or handloom cotton, the state emporiums in Patna have more choice.

Questions

Nalanda — FAQ

Can I wear shorts to the Nalanda ruins?

It is not banned at the ruins, but long, loose clothing protects you better from the sun. You will need to cover your knees at the Jain temples and local shrines.

Why can't I carry leather into the Pawapuri temple?

Jain temples do not allow items made from animal skin, as Jainism is built on non-violence. Leave leather belts, wallets and bags outside or in your vehicle.

Do I need warm clothes for Nalanda in winter?

A light jacket or sweater is enough. December and January mornings can be cold and foggy, but afternoons are usually pleasant.
