Local tips

Visit on the way to or from Nashik Road railway station, as it is close by.

Go before 9 am or after 4 pm, when the marble is cooler underfoot.

Wear sunglasses in bright sun, because the white marble reflects a lot of glare.

Ask before taking photos inside the shrines, as rules can differ from shrine to shrine.

Spend time in the Krishna temple to see the Gita carvings and Mulgaonkar paintings.

Leave shoes at the stand by the entrance.

Expect more pilgrims during the Kumbh period, when the dharamshala fills up.

All twelve Jyotirlingas in one place

Muktidham is a white marble temple complex in Nashik Road, the eastern part of the city, close to the railway station. It was built in 1971 with money from J. D. Chauhan-Bytco, a local industrialist, and is run by a private trust. The marble came from Makrana in Rajasthan, the same source as the Taj Mahal, and craftsmen from Rajasthan carved it.

What is inside

The complex holds replicas of all twelve Jyotirlingas, so pilgrims who cannot travel to each one can pray at them all here. The Krishna temple has the eighteen chapters of the Bhagavad Gita inscribed on its walls. Paintings by the artist Raghubir Mulgaonkar show scenes from Krishna's life and the Mahabharata. There are also images of Vishnu, Lakshmi, Rama and Durga.

A calm stop

Muktidham is far less crowded than Trimbakeshwar or Ramkund and has no long queues on normal days. It fills up during the Kumbh, when its dharamshala, with space for about 200 pilgrims, is in demand. The rules are relaxed, but it is still an active temple: remove shoes, dress modestly and keep your voice down.

When to go

White marble glares in the midday sun and gets hot underfoot, so go in the early morning or late afternoon. It makes an easy stop if you arrive or leave by train at Nashik Road station. It is on the opposite side of the city from Panchavati and the vineyards, so plan it as part of an arrival or departure. See Nashik photo spots for the rest of the city.
