What to Wear in Nashik

Nashik asks for two wardrobes: modest, easy-off clothes for the temples and ghats, and something a little smarter for a vineyard evening. The weather is kinder than much of the Deccan, but summer middays are still hot.

Temple days

Most of Nashik's sights are temples, so pack for them. Cover shoulders and knees, choose loose cotton, and wear sandals you can slip off in seconds. A cotton kurta set in saffron, white or mustard works at Ramkund and Kalaram, and it photographs well against old stone.

The Trimbakeshwar rule

Trimbakeshwar has a firmer rule than most. General darshan needs only modest clothes, and shorts and sleeveless tops are turned away. Men who enter the inner sanctum, usually for a booked puja, wear a cotton dhoti and no shirt or trousers. Priests expect white or saffron. Women take darshan from outside the core area. You will also leave your phone at the counter, so carry little.

Wine country

For Sula Vineyards and the other estates, smart casual is right: linen shirts, light dresses, loafers or flats. White and burgundy suit the setting. The tasting rooms are relaxed, but terrace dinners get dressier at weekends. Bring a light scarf or jacket in winter, as the evening breeze off the Gangapur backwaters turns cool.

Traditional Marathi dress

The nauvari is the nine-yard Marathi saree, draped between the legs like a dhoti so the wearer can move freely. Men's festive wear is a dhoti and kurta with a pheta, the bright tied turban. Both come out at weddings, Gudi Padwa and Ganesh Chaturthi. The Nashik district town of Yeola is a weaving centre for Paithani silk sarees, known for their peacock borders.

Season by season

From November to February, days are warm and nights can fall to around 10 °C, so pack a jumper or shawl. April and May are hot and dry; wear a hat and light colours, and plan temples for early morning. In the monsoon, from June to September, Trimbakeshwar and Brahmagiri are much wetter than the city. Bring a rain jacket and shoes with grip for wet temple steps.
