May and June

Camps and guesthouses reopen through May, and by June the valley is fully running. Days are warm in the sun, nights are cold, and the sky is usually clear. June is one of the best months: the snow on the peaks makes a good backdrop, and the July crowds have not yet arrived. Apricot trees blossom earlier, in spring, in the lower villages such as Turtuk.

July and August

This is peak season, with the most visitors, the busiest dunes and the fullest camps. Nubra lies in the rain shadow, so it stays mostly dry while the rest of India has its monsoon. Sudden storms still happen in Ladakh, though, and they can cause flash floods and mudslides on the roads, so keep a spare day. Apricots ripen in Turtuk around July and August.

September

The crowds thin, the light turns clear and golden, and the days are still pleasant. Nights are colder, and some camps start to close towards the end of the month. For photography, September is hard to beat.

October to April

Winter in Nubra is severe, with temperatures well below freezing, frozen water pipes, and most camps and cafés closed. Khardung La is kept open through the year, but it closes for hours or days after heavy snow, so your plans have to bend. A few guesthouses in Diskit stay open. Visit in winter only with a good driver, proper cold-weather gear and flexible dates. Dosmoche at Diskit, usually in February, is the main reason to come.

Whatever the month

Spend 48 hours in Leh before crossing the pass, and check road status the day before you travel. See what to wear for layers.
