What to Wear in Pahalgam

Pahalgam is cooler than Srinagar and much colder once you head up the side valleys. Dress in layers you can add and remove through the day.

Spring and summer

From May to August, days in Pahalgam are mild and can be warm in the sun, but mornings by the river are chilly and nights are cold. A long-sleeved top, a fleece and a light down jacket cover most days. Add a waterproof shell; showers come through often, especially in spring. Aru and Betaab are higher and breezier than town, so keep a warm layer in your daypack.

Footwear

Meadows are wet in the morning and muddy after rain. Wear walking shoes or light boots with a good grip, not sandals. For rafting, the operator provides a life jacket and helmet; wear quick-dry clothes and shoes you do not mind getting soaked, and bring a change of clothes.

Autumn and winter

By October, mornings are near freezing, and from December snow often covers the town. Winter needs thermals, a heavy jacket, a woollen hat, gloves and waterproof boots. Many guesthouses have limited heating, so warm sleepwear helps.

For the Amarnath Yatra

Pilgrims walking from Chandanwari cross passes above 4,000 m, where weather can turn to snow and sleet in any month. The shrine board advises warm woollens, a waterproof jacket and trousers, sturdy trekking shoes, gloves, a torch and a walking stick. Pack for cold even if Pahalgam is warm.

Local dress and modesty

Kashmir is conservative, and loose, long clothing fits in best in town, especially around mosques and shrines. Women may want a scarf for any place of worship. A woollen pheran bought in Srinagar or the Pahalgam market is warm and practical for evenings. Choose pashmina from trusted shops and be wary of very cheap offers.
