Best time to visit Patna

October to March is the time to go. Summer is very hot, and the monsoon can bring floods and waterlogging, so plan those months with care.

October and November: the best weeks

The rains are over, the air clears, and days are warm rather than hot. This is also when Patna celebrates Chhath Puja, Bihar's biggest festival, on the Ganga ghats. Trains and hotels fill up around Chhath, so book early or plan around it. Sonepur Mela, the big animal and trade fair across the river, usually starts around Kartik Purnima in November.

December to February: cool and foggy

Days are pleasant for walking, but mornings and nights are cold, and dense fog is common from late December to mid-January. Fog can delay trains and early flights by hours. Build slack into your plans. The Prakash Parv of Guru Gobind Singh, around late December or early January, fills the Takht and the old city with pilgrims.

March: warm and green

A good month for sightseeing before the heat. Holi falls in March, and the streets are loud and colourful for a day.

April to June: heat

April and May bring dry heat and hot winds, often above 40 °C. June turns humid before the rain arrives. If you must visit, see things before 10 am, spend the middle of the day in the air-conditioned Bihar Museum, and go out again at dusk. Ram Navami, usually in March or April, brings huge crowds to Mahavir Mandir.

July to September: monsoon and flood risk

The monsoon usually reaches Patna in the second half of June. Heavy rain causes waterlogging in low-lying parts of the city, and the Ganga can rise very high by August and September. In September 2026 it passed its highest recorded flood level at Gandhi Ghat, and Bihar saw widespread floods. Riverside ghats may be closed. If you travel in these months, check flood news and the local advisories before you go.

Quick guide

  • Best overall: October to early December, and February to March.
  • Festivals: Chhath (October or November), Prakash Parv (December or January), Holi (March).
  • Avoid if you can: May and June for heat, August and September for flood risk.
