April to June: dress for real heat
April and May are dry and fierce, with hot winds in the afternoon. June turns sticky before the monsoon arrives. Wear loose cotton or linen in light colours, a cap or a dupatta over your head outdoors, and good sunglasses. Carry a water bottle everywhere. Locals drink sattu sharbat for the same reason.
July to September: humid and wet
The monsoon brings heavy showers and waterlogged streets, especially in low-lying parts of the city. Quick-dry clothes, a compact umbrella and sandals with grip work better than canvas shoes. Avoid long hems that trail in puddles.
October to March: layers
October and March are warm. From December to about mid-January, mornings and nights get cold and often foggy, and houses are not heated. Bring a sweater or a light jacket and a shawl, and something warm for the early start if you plan to see a Chhath sunrise at the ghats in November.
At the Takht and the temples
At Takht Sri Patna Sahib everyone covers their head, men and women alike. Scarves are handed out at the entrance, but bringing your own is easier. Shoes come off at the shoe counter, and you walk barefoot on marble, so socks help in winter. Wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. The same goes for Mahavir Mandir and Patan Devi. Easy-off sandals save time.
What locals wear
A cotton kurta set is the easy everyday choice for both men and women. For weddings and festivals, look for Bhagalpuri tussar silk, the textured, golden-beige silk woven in Bhagalpur, about 230 km east. Men wear the dhoti-kurta for temple visits and ceremonies. You can find tussar sarees and dupattas in the silk shops around Maurya Lok and Boring Road.
Colours for photos
White and pale colours look good against the Takht, but can wash out against the pale Golghar dome; rust, navy or maroon work better there. At the Bihar Museum, darker clothes stand out against the light walls.
