Best time to visit Pelling
The best time to visit Pelling is when the mountain shows itself. That is mostly October to December, with a second, hazier window in spring.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedOct – Mar
Cold, with snow on the higher ground and some high passes and roads closed — beautiful, but pack and plan for it.
Pack: heavy insulated layers, gloves, a warm hat and waterproof boots.
Shines now: Kanchenjunga Viewpoint

RecommendedApr – Jun
The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.
Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.

Jul – Sep
Lush and green but wet, with a real risk of landslides and roadblocks on mountain routes.
Pack: a waterproof shell, quick-dry layers and sturdy, grippy footwear.
Shines now: Khecheopalri Lake
Plan a monsoon day →October to December: the clear months
After the monsoon ends, the air is washed clean and Kanchenjunga is out most mornings. Days are sunny and pleasant, nights cold. This is Pelling's busiest season, especially around Dashain and Tihar in October and November, so book rooms early.
January and February: cold and quiet
Mornings are near or below freezing and there can be a light snowfall on some days, though it is not reliable. Views are often very good. Rooms are cheaper, but check that your hotel has heating or extra blankets. The Pemayangtse cham dances fall in February, just before Losar.
March to May: flowers and haze
Rhododendrons bloom in the forests from around March, and the days are warm. Haze builds as the season goes on, and by May the peaks may stay hidden for days. Afternoon showers begin in April. This is still a good time if you care more about walks than the view.
June to September: the monsoon
Rain arrives in early to mid June and lasts into September. Cloud hides the range almost every day. The bigger problem is the roads: landslides cut routes into and around Pelling most years. In September 2026 a landslide at Rimbi damaged the road towards Yuksom and Khecheopalri, and repairs were expected to take months. The skywalk has also been reported to close for part of the monsoon. If you come now, leave spare days before any flight and check roads each morning.
The short answer
For the mountain, come between mid-October and mid-December. For fewer people and still-good views, try late January and February. Avoid July and August unless you are happy with mist.

Questions
Pelling — FAQ
Which month has the best Kanchenjunga view from Pelling?
November is usually the clearest, with October and December close behind. Clear mornings are common then, though no month guarantees one.
Is Pelling worth visiting in the monsoon?
Only if you have spare days and don't mind cloud. The peaks are rarely seen, and landslides can close roads for days. Many hotels offer lower rates then.
When do rhododendrons bloom around Pelling?
From around March into April, depending on the altitude and the year. The higher forests on the way to Yuksom and beyond flower later than those near town.
Is it too cold to visit Pelling in January?
Not if you pack for it. Days are often bright and clear. Nights and dawns are very cold, and not every hotel is well heated.
