Best time to visit Pondicherry
The best time to visit Pondicherry is from December to March, when the days are warm and dry, the sea is calm and early mornings are pleasant for walking. It is also the busiest season, especially around Christmas and New Year.
Unlike most of India, Pondicherry gets most of its rain from the northeast monsoon, usually from October to December. October and November are the wettest months, with heavy showers and the chance of a cyclone. From June to September the city gets only some rain and stays hot and humid.

December to February
The rain eases through December, and January and February are usually the most comfortable months, with sunny days, lower humidity and calm seas. This is the peak season for sightseeing, the beaches and Auroville.
March
Days get hotter, but mornings and evenings are still pleasant and the crowds start to thin. Masi Magam, one of the city's biggest festivals, usually falls in February or March.
April to June
These are the hottest months, with sticky afternoons. Plan walks for early morning and evening, and spend the middle of the day indoors or in a café.
July to September
Pondicherry gets some rain in these months, but much less than the west coast. It stays hot and humid, and it is a quieter, cheaper time to visit. Bastille Day on 14 July brings French-style celebrations to the seafront.
October and November
These are the wettest months of the northeast monsoon. Heavy rain can flood streets for a while, and cyclones sometimes hit this coast, so check weather warnings before you travel and keep your plans flexible.
When Is Pondicherry Most Crowded?
Pondicherry is busiest from late December to early January, around Christmas and New Year, and on long weekends, when many visitors drive down from Chennai and Bengaluru. Hotels fill up and White Town cafés get crowded.
For a quieter trip, visit in February or early March, or on weekdays, and do your sightseeing early in the morning.
