About the Sri Aurobindo Ashram
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram was founded in 1926 by the Indian philosopher and yogi Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual collaborator Mirra Alfassa, known as the Mother. Its main building is a grey-and-white house in White Town, and the ashram community also runs schools, workshops and other buildings across the town.
At the heart of the main building is the Samadhi, a white marble shrine under a large tree, where the remains of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother rest. It is covered each day with fresh flowers, and visitors sit around it in silence. The atmosphere is very calm, and the ashram asks everyone to keep complete silence and switch off their phones inside.
