About Auroville
Auroville is an international township about 12 km north of Pondicherry, founded in 1968 with the idea of people from all over the world living together. It is spread across red-earth land and forest, with small communities, workshops, cafés and shops dotted between the trees.
At its centre is the Matrimandir, a large golden sphere surrounded by gardens and used for silent concentration. Most visitors start at the Visitor Centre, see a short introduction, and then walk to the viewing point in the gardens to see the Matrimandir from outside. Going inside the inner chamber is a separate visit that must be booked in advance.
