About Promenade Beach

Promenade Beach, also called Rock Beach, is the seafront of Pondicherry. It runs along Goubert Avenue for about 1.5 km, with the Bay of Bengal on one side and colonial buildings on the other. Along the way you pass the Gandhi statue, the French War Memorial, the old lighthouse and the old pier.

The shore is lined with large rocks rather than sand, so it is a place to walk rather than swim. The road is usually closed to vehicles in the early morning and evening, when it fills with walkers, joggers and families. The seafront faces east, so sunrise here is one of the best moments of any visit to Pondicherry.
