Plan a monsoon day →October to March: the main season
This is when Rajgir is easiest. Days are mild and sunny, and December and January mornings can drop to around 8 °C. It is the right weather for the stone path up Vulture Peak and for a slow afternoon at Nalanda. It is also when international pilgrims arrive, so monasteries and hotels fill up from November. The Rajgir Mahotsav, a cultural festival with music and dance, is held in the cool season; the 2025 edition ran from 19 to 21 December.
Foggy mornings in late December and January can soften the valley views from the pagoda. Aim for mid-morning up top on those days.
April to June: the hot months
Temperatures regularly reach 40 °C and sometimes more. The hills are bare rock, and the ruins at Nalanda have almost no shade. If you come now, climb at first light, rest from late morning to about 4 pm, and go out again in the evening. Hotels are quieter and cheaper, except during the Malmas Mela, which falls in some years; the last ran from mid-May to mid-June 2026 and drew huge crowds to the hot springs.
Late June to September: the monsoon
The monsoon usually reaches Bihar in the second half of June. The hills turn green and the air cools a little, but it is humid, and paths get slippery. Rain often comes in heavy bursts rather than all day. The ropeways can pause in storms and high wind. For Buddhists this is also the season of the monastic rains retreat, which the Buddha kept in Rajgir more than once.
Festivals to plan around
- Chhath Puja (October or November): Bihar's biggest festival. Trains are packed for days either side.
- Buddha Purnima (April or May): prayers at the Buddhist sites, but in the heat.
- Rajgir Mahotsav (cool season, dates vary): check the Bihar tourism site for the year's dates.
Our pick
Late October, November, February and early March give the best balance of pleasant weather, clear light and manageable crowds. See what's on before you book.
