Best time to visit Rameswaram

The best time to visit Rameswaram is from January to March, when the weather is dry and warm, the sea is calmer and the road to Dhanushkodi is at its best. It is hot all year round, so the question is really about rain, wind and crowds.

Unlike most of India, Rameswaram gets most of its rain from October to December, during the northeast monsoon. The months from April to September are hot and mostly dry, with strong winds from around June.

Best Month to Visit Rameswaram

January to March

The best months. Skies are clear, the heat is manageable and the sea is usually calm, which is ideal for Agni Theertham, the Pamban bridges and Dhanushkodi. Mahashivaratri, usually in February or March, draws big crowds.

April to June

Hot and humid, hottest in May. Do the temple and beaches early in the morning and late in the afternoon, and rest in the middle of the day. School holidays make this a busy time for families.

July to September

Still hot, with little rain but strong winds that blow sand at Dhanushkodi and can make the sea rough. The Aadi Thirukalyanam festival at the temple usually falls in July and August.

October to December

The northeast monsoon brings heavy rain, especially in November, and occasional cyclone warnings. Roads to Dhanushkodi can close in bad weather, so keep your plans flexible and check the forecast before you go.

When Is Rameswaram Most Crowded?

Rameswaram is busiest on new-moon (Amavasai) days, especially Thai Amavasai (January–February) and Aadi Amavasai (July–August), when large numbers of pilgrims come to perform rites for their ancestors at Agni Theertham. Mahashivaratri, weekends and school holidays are also crowded.

For a quieter trip, visit on a weekday away from new-moon days and festivals, and reach the temple as early as you can.
