About Agni Theertham
Agni Theertham is the stretch of beach just outside the east gate of the Ramanathaswamy Temple. It is the first stop for many pilgrims, who take a dip in the sea here before going into the temple for the bath at the 22 wells and darshan.
The beach is busiest at sunrise, when priests, families and pilgrims fill the water's edge and the sun rises over the sea. On new-moon days, it becomes very crowded with people performing rites for their ancestors. The water is usually shallow and calm here, but it is a place of ritual rather than a beach for swimming or relaxing.
